Himalaya 2010 wrap-up: Summit plans buried in the snow.

A snow storm has wrapped Everest and Cho Oyu, thwarting all summit plans and keeping teams stuck at BCs at least until the weekend. The Italian Hornbein team has its first man down and driven back to Kathmandu due to AMS.

Alberto Zerain and Xtingu aborted their summit push plans due to worsening weather conditions. Tuesday night there was heavy snowfall and frequent avalanches.

Italian team member Gianluca was helped down to BC because of AMS. Unfortunately, the expedition is over for him.

“Snow has kept us in base camp for the past few days,” Eric Larsen wrote yesterday. “The pace of camp life has slowed considerablely. With day after day of weather delays, simple tasks have taken on a tortise-like quality. We are trying to make time pass.”

However, “forecasts announce clearing skies in another two to three days — our collective fingers and toes are crossed,” Eric Larson also reported.

Cho Oyu

”Fabrizio has just called in to let us know that they had been snowed on very heavily and that they had retreated to ABC to await the better conditions expected in a few days,” FTA home team told ExplorersWeb yesterday.

IMG team actually set off towards C1 on Tuesday, aiming for the summit on September 25, but turned back before reaching the camp in a worsening snow storm.

While waiting it out in ABC, Adventure Consultants kept in touch with their Sherpas who are still in higher camps. “Reports from higher on the mountain are that over one meter of snow has fallen,” they posted yesterday. “Two of our Sherpas on the mountain were waist-deep in snow at C1 and reported wide spread avalanche activity. On the way down the Sherpas dug out our tents at C1 that had been completely buried by snowfall.”
