Himalaya 2010 wrap-up: Everest sieged from both flanks, Cho Oyu C2, Manaslu C1.

Climbers on Everest’s north side will join forces on the Hornbein Couloir, which on the south side the Icefall Docs are back at work on the Khumbu Icefall. High camps are also being set up on Cho Oyu and Manaslu.

Everest Hornbein: Chinese go for Italian

The Italian Hornbein team have managed to set up BC without entirely losing their patience with the Chinese military and L.O. The border patrols took all the salami and Italian bread supplies, “a real low blow” as the Italians pointed out. The L.O. demanded extra cash because his account of the cargo weight was different from the calculations previously made by the Italians. “It is so absurd, almost laughable. We feel like idiots. Otherwise, though, there is nothing we can do against their contemptuous behaviuour.”

A water course in Rongbuk Glacier forced the Italians to set up BC lower than expected. They hope to carry loads to ABC asap, though. They have also met up with Alberto Zerain and his mates, who are carrying their gear to ABC on their backs in several trips.

Zerain not solo anymore

Alberto Zerain confirmed in a post last weekend that he is not soloing the mountain. “Juan Carlos Arrieta ‘Txingu’ was going to acclimatize with me,” he said. “Now that we are at 5,900 meters at the base of the wall, it is his decision what to do next. He is definitely climbing the Japanese Couloir with me, and then we will chose whether to go for the Hornbein as well or not.”

“An Italian team has just arrived, therefore, we will all share the goal,” Alberto also noted.

Everest South side: Icefall Docs at work in fall

“I have seen pictures and read about the Everest Base Camp for quite some time, but the actual set up is some what different than I anticipated…. In a good way,” Eric Larsen reported from the lonely spot. “We are only one of three camps here. My team, the Icefall Docs, and a Japanese team–maybe 25 people total. During the spring climbing season, there are nearly 500 people at Base Camp.”

”The other good news is the Icefall Docs have been hard at work and have fixed most of the route to C1,” Eric added.

Lhotse: Pirates off

Jordi Tosas, Jordi Corominas and Israel Blanco are departing tomorrow. Sebastián Alvaro will film the ascent from BC.

Manaslu: C1

Carlos Pauner and Javier Perez have set up C1 at 5,700 meters. They are currently back in BC expecting weather conditions to worsen in the next few days.

Cho Oyu: C2 rotation

Mike Hamill reports from ABC that the team has started the C2 rotation,” IMG leader Mike Hamill reported. “Our Sherpas have six tents, sleeping bags, and pads in place at C2”.

Amical team members went up towards C2 earlier today in great weather. “Temperatures soared up to 25ºC (77ºF) at almost 7,000 meters!,” the team reported.
